Limitation

Release notes are typed in a custom rich-text HTML Release Note field in an Azure DevOps work item.

Logic in the Release Notes extension collects the notes into a list at a release. The list can be exported as HTML or Markdown.

Unfortunately, the rich-text HTML in the Release Note field is not always transformed to Markdown when the list is exported from the Release Notes extension as Markdown. For example, the exported file may have something like:

| Note | Product |
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|---------|
| New <br>functionality <span style="color: blue">is added</span> | Forge |

To provide PMs with a clean Markdown file to review in a pull request, the faulty export must be cleaned up manually.

Solution 1: HTML > MD > HTML

Send an HTML file to a wiki page in Clearpath Community. The benefit is that the Release Notes extension export is pure HTML instead of half Markdown and half HTML, arguably making cleanup easier. For context, see Prepare release notes for review.

  • Export from the Release Notes extension as HTML
  • Transform HTML to Markdown
    • Clean up exported HTML
    • Use pandoc to transform HTML to Markdown
    • Clean up transformed HTML
  • Send Markdown to PMs in a pull request
  • Transform Markdown to HTML supported by Clearpath Community
    • Transform Markdown to HTML
    • Clean up HTML
  • Assemble each release notes file (e.g., March 2022, April 2022, etc.) into one file (e.g., 2022)
  • Customize styles (optional)
  • Send the HTML file to Clearpath Community (see Community site pages setup)

Solution 2: MD > HTML

The benefit is that content doesn't have to be transformed twice like in Solution 1.

  • Export from the Release Notes extension as Markdown
  • Clean up exported Markdown code
  • Send a pull request as Markdown to PMs
  • Assemble each release notes file (e.g., March 2022, April 2022, etc.) into one file (e.g., 2022)
  • Use pandoc to transform HTML to Markdown
  • Conform CSS to Clearpath Community standards
  • Customize styles (optional)
  • Send the HTML file to Clearpath Community (see Community site pages setup)

Solution 3: Handlebars code (unsuccessful)

The Release Notes extension's support team suggests:

{{#markdown}}{{{ field-html 'Vertex.ReleaseNote' }}}{{/markdown}}
