How they're generated

Release notes are generated in the Release Notes extension, an Azure DevOps extension. The extension:

  • Compares Azure DevOps releases to identify work items that represent changes between releases
  • Uses templating logic in a template to:
    • Filter out work items that don't meet the work item logic
    • Use fields marked in the work item to curate a note with a title, description, and work item ID
    • Sort notes by product
  • Exports a file of the notes to the release-notes repo

How they're published

Local scripts:

  • Transform the exported file to a format compatible with Clearpath Community requirements
  • Post the notes on Clearpath Community

How they're refreshed

Execute the scripts manually to refresh a release notes page on Clearpath Community.

Back-end setup

See Custom fields on Azure DevOps work items.

Labels

The release notes extension's templates are tagged with labels that drive the sort order and section headings on the published page.

Local scripts prepare notes for review, assembly, and publish

note

See Prepare release notes for review for steps to execute.

The scripts directory in the release-notes repo contains:

ScriptWhat it does
1_html-to-md.shTransforms exported HTML to Markdown (see why the export is in HTML and not Markdown)
2_assemble-markdown.shAssembles all release notes files in reverse chronological order and adds a master table of contents
3_md-to-html.shTransforms the exported Markdown to HTML, applies CSS styles supported by Clearpath Community, and posts it on Clearpath Community; see Community site pages setup for steps to get a token for the restUserToken variable
img.shUploads images to Clearpath Community and outputs the URL so they can be inserted in the published page on Clearpath Community; see Include images in release notes
only-toc-on-existing-md.shUpdates the table of contents for a release date file if the file was changed after the original table of contents is generated

See the detailed notes at the top of each script for added information.
